Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that actually has a health benefit. The septum of the nose is ideally supposed to be located directly in the center of the nasal cavity to differentiate the nose into two seperate nostrils. However, serious damage or improper growth before or after birth lead to one side of the other being more pronounced due to the growth of cartilage and bone being uneven.

A deviated septum causes breathing issues by way of impeding air flow. This can cause chronic sinus related concerns that can be quite uncomfortable and even hazardous to the individual’s health if the deviation is too pronounced.

To alleviate the issue by way of septoplasty a plastic surgeon will perform a procedure that cuts away the excess inside the nose via small incisions. This is an obviously painful procedure so they utilize local or general anesthetics for the time of the procedure. During the procedure most of the inner septum will be removed with roughly a centimeter of cartilage in a “L” strut formation inside for support. After this the cosmetic surgeon will normally install plastic or similar type supports inside the nose to maintain its shape and integrity.

Post-operation there can be considerable swelling in the area as the body attempts to correct this correction. Septoplasty is rarely done simply for cosmetic benefit as most individuals cannot see inside the nose when they are talking to another human being. Cosmetic surgery of this type should only be performed by a licensed physician in a clean and professional environment. The risk of infection, swelling, and negative side effects increases dramatically with black market surgeons whom operate out of low budget offices that aren’t hygenic or professionally appointed. A proper surgeon will have at least five years of medical practice and two years of that will need to have been spent as a plastic surgeon for them to be truly qualified.
